San Giusto a Rentennano La Ricolma Merlot Toscana IGT 2008 x 6 x 75cl

The San Giusto estate has a history as long and as complex as its wine. A medieval monastery, then repurposed as a fortress in the 9th century to protect the Florentines against the Sienese in a war only ceasing hundreds of years later in the 15th century. The Ricasoli family has been a part of the history of the 160 estate for many centuries and count as vinous nobility.

La Ricolma is a pure varietal Merlot that is sourced from several parcels of land. The little produced wine is made by a long maceration to extract colour and tannins and spends nearly two years in barrel. The wine is then bottled unfiltered, and then aged for another six months before it hits the market.

2008 was considered a difficult vintage for many in Tuscany – but not for the San Giusto estate. Bold, rich purple and brick red hues lead to a dark fruit dominated nose, followed by clove and pepper spice. This brooding wine has a full mocha mouthfeel and rich berry fruit. This easily has another 10 years ahead of it, but is drinking beautifully now.
